Wellness Classes

At Community Wellness we understand how challenging it can be to adopt healthy lifestyle habits. Group classes are offered in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that foster an environment of social support. Classes are kept small and suitable for all levels of experience allowing instructors to offer personal attention to each student. We are proud to offer a wide range of classes designed to fit into your busy schedule and help improve the quality of life for all members of the MIT community.


Fall 2014 registration:

    Registration for Fall-2014 wellness classes is now available.

  1. Click the “register” button beneath the class you’d like to register for, complete the form on the following page, and click the “register” button on that page. If you wish to register for more than one class, you must register separately for each one.

  2. You will then be directed to our secure online credit card payment site. Once your payment has been processed you will receive a confirmation email. Checks and cash are not accepted.

  3. Your registration is not confirmed until you receive the payment confirmation email from us.

Class minimums must be met for classes to run. Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. No refunds will be issued to participants after the second week of classes. Classes will not meet on institute holidays and fees are adjusted to accommodate holidays.

American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR AED (Thursday October 2, at 5:00 pm)

American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR AED

Heartsaver® CPR AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult, pediatric and infant CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking on an adult, child and infant. This course teaches skills with AHA’s research-proven Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guide the students’ learning of skills.

American Heart Association Infant CPR Anytime® (Saturday October 4 at 1:30 pm)

Infant CPR Anytime® is for new parents, grandparents, family members and anyone who wants to learn lifesaving infant CPR and choking skills but does not need a course completion card. This kit also is used in hospital NICU and PICU programs to teach skills to new parents, while allowing nursing staff to focus on patient care.

NEWBORNS & INFANTS CLASSES

Mommy & Me Yoga

Mom and Baby Yoga classes focus on restoring strength and vitality and bringing comfort to your postpartum body through asanas, (postures), relaxation and breathing techniques. In this class we will focus in particular on relieving stress and strain from the neck, shoulders, arms and hands while rebuilding strength through the core. You will learn to do yoga with your baby in a playful and loving way incorporating songs and games which creates a unique and joyful experience. Mom and Baby Yoga is also a chance to reconnect with the supportive community that you may have found in Prenatal Yoga, or to connect with a new community of mothers and babies. Yoga is the practice of uniting mind, body and spirit, and sharing this special time with your baby creates a peaceful and fun hour that will last long after the class is over. Open to all levels, including beginners. Babies 4 weeks to crawling are welcome! Led by Celeste Lemieux

PRENATAL CLASSES

Prenatal Yoga (gentle to moderate level)

This class prepares your body for childbirth with movement in gentle to moderate postures (asanas) that stretch, strengthen and tone muscles, breathing techniques for focus, and meditation to connect with one’s inner self and center of intuition. Hadassah's Gentle yoga classes are relaxing and rejuvenating. The focus is on stretching muscles, aligning bones and moving wtih breath. Gentle Yoga is excellent for anyone seeking stress relief, improved flexibility, increased body awareness and reprieve from aches and pains. As a teacher, Hadassah draws on a variety of mind/body systems as well as her dance background. Classes are open to all levels including beginners. Led by Hadassah Segal.

Yoga for Busy People (Wednesdays 1:00 pm)

This class is for you if you want to try yoga (beginners are welcome) but find it challenging to carve out time for exercise and relaxation after work. During lunch hour over seven weks, we will learn fundamental yogal postures and progress to more creative sequences of movement. The instructor will introduce you to different aspects of yoga (not just physical exercise), including correct breathing, posture alignment and mindfulness. This class assumes no prior yoga experience, but posture modifications and advanced practice options will be offered to seasoned students who want to join. The goal is to break up the monotony of your work day, reset your energy level at lunch, correct for some common physical misalignments (like back or shoulder pain) from working at a desk all the time...and have some fun! Led by Qi Zhai Metzler.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) (Mondays 11:30-12:30 pm)

This 8 week program teaches participants how to use their innate resources and abilities to respond more effectively to stress, pain and illness. The program includes guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices, gentle stretching and mindful yoga, group dialogue and daily home assignments. Research indicates that mindfulness practices can be highly effective in a wide variety of ways including lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, and improved self-esteem. Come join us to learn how to decrease your stress by applying mindfulness to your everyday life! Led by Ashley Norwood in Room E23-319.

Tai Chi for Strength and Balance (Tuesdays 12:00)

When it comes to reducing the physical and mental tensions that we encounter in our daily lives, slow is the new fast! Tai Chi is meditation in motion. It is the practice of moving calmly with awareness and ease. Classwork will be based on the Yang Style of Tai Chi and will include Eight Movement Form, and easy-to-learn, introductory tai chi set as well as the longer 24 Movement Form for those returning students. Work in Fitness for Women (Tuesdays 1:00 pm)

Like Work in Fitness, Work in Fitness for Women™ is an exercise conditioning class that helps improve overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance while fortifying specific areas that are challenged by long hours of sitting in a passive work environment: neck, shoulders, abdominals, lower back, hamstrings and hip flexors. Class incorporates Chinese Kung Fu and Chi K'ung exercises supplemented with upper body strength training, mat work for core conditioning and additional bone strengthening exercises to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes. Weights and floor mats provided. Led by Dorri Li.

MIND/BODY CLASSES (NEW CLASSES)

Write to Thrive (Mondays 11:00 am)

This 8 week class combines aspects of wellness coaching, journal writing and mindfulness and is based on evidence-based interventions that have been shown to increase positivity, happiness, optimism and overall wellbeing. Weekly themes include: developing positivity, increasing gratitude and appreciation, finding meaning and purpose, identifying and using personal strengths, and setting self-concordant goals. Each class combines lecture, discussion and writing exercises. Sharing is optional and no writing experience is required. Led by Lauren Mayhew.

Lincoln Laboratory Wellness Classes

Group Health Coaching at Lincoln Laboratory Lexington

This health coaching course is designed to help you take charge of your health - you are in the driver's seat as you bridge the gap between knowing what you "should" be doing, and doing it consistently. Over the 8 weeks you will create strategies to set and maintain your own goals, identify challenges, gain self-awareness, brainstorm and share ideas with like-minded individuals and increase your confidence in your ability to adopt healthy changes.

The session runs for 8 consecutive Tuesdays from 12-1pm in AC-120 on Tuesday October 7th through Tuesday November 25th.
